A Milwaukee Winter Wedding That Felt Like a Warm Hug

Winter weddings in Milwaukee have a special kind of magic. The air is crisp. The city feels quieter, softer. And inside, everything glows just a little brighter!

Jeremy and Madeline’s wedding at The Atrium in Shorewood, Wisconsin was exactly that—warm, intentional, and deeply rooted in who they are and what they value. It wasn’t about trends or Pinterest-perfect moments. It was about people. Their people.

And honestly? That’s my favorite kind of day to photograph.

Jeremy and Madeline’s first look inside The Atrium in Shorewood, capturing their genuine reactions and natural connection on their Milwaukee winter wedding day.

From Marquette Law School to “I Do”

Jeremy and Madeline’s story starts where a lot of Milwaukee love stories begin: Marquette Law School.

Madeline grew up in Seattle before heading to the Midwest for college and eventually landing in Milwaukee for law school.

Jeremy grew up in Texas and made his way north for Marquette as well.

Two different coasts, one very fate-filled mixer.

They met at a law school event, several actually, and later—Jeremy sent Madeline an email inviting her to dinner to congratulate her on a huge accomplishment. (Yes, an email… Although, romantic in a “we’re-law-students-and-this-is-our-love-language” kind of way.)

Their friends and family spilled this story during the speeches, and the room was full of laughter, nodding, and that collective “this is so them”!

See below for candids of speeches made by all family. So many cute, candid moments!

Why They Chose The Atrium in Shorewood

Madeline and Jeremy didn’t just stumble into their venue—they toured a lot of places around Milwaukee and the surrounding areas.

And then they walked into The Atrium.

“It was the first place that we immediately agreed we could see ourselves getting married there and got excited.”

They loved:

  • The beautiful indoor space (hello, winter-friendly and light-filled)

  • The rooftop for skyline moments

  • The staff who felt easy to talk to

  • The connections and resources that made planning smoother

As a Milwaukee wedding photographer, I can tell you—this venue is a dream for couples who want flexibility, clean architectural lines, and space that works in every season Wisconsin throws at us.

The Feeling of the Day

It was a true Wisconsin winter wedding. Cold outside, cozy inside.

Family traveled from Texas and beyond, bundled up and ready to celebrate. The contrast between the winter chill and the warmth inside The Atrium made everything feel even more meaningful.

The atmosphere wasn’t flashy. It wasn’t over-styled.

It was intentional. Emotional. Community-centered.

They asked me early on to focus on their friends and family—on the connections, the hugs, the laughter in the corners of the room. That became the heartbeat of the entire gallery.

Values at the Center of It All

When I asked what they loved most about each other, their answers said everything.

What Jeremy Loves About Madeline

Her heart. Her passion for helping people.

Madeline chose to become a public defender because she couldn’t imagine a career that didn’t center on serving others. That value—showing up for people—was woven into every part of their day.

What Madeline Loves About Jeremy

His values.

Not just what he believes, but how he lives them.

A Beautiful Blend of Family Tradition

One of the most meaningful moments of the day was when Madeline and Jeremy honored Jeremy’s family by changing into traditional Sri Lankan attire.

They wore it for:

  • Family photos

  • Couple portraits

  • The reception and dancing

It wasn’t just a wardrobe change—it was a statement of belonging, respect, and cultural celebration. Moments like this are why inclusive wedding photography in Milwaukee matters so much to me. Every story deserves to be told fully, thoughtfully, and beautifully.

The Details That Made It Them

Instead of traditional table numbers, Madeline and Jeremy created custom news bulletins for their guests—filled with fun facts, things they love, and interactive activities to enjoy while waiting for dinner.

And then there was the moment.

Madeline designed a custom sign for their home and revealed it during the dancing portion of the evening. We snuck up to The Atrium’s rooftop afterward to capture it in their final photos of the night.

Cold? Yes. Worth it? Also yes.

What They Wanted in a Milwaukee Wedding Photographer

Their photography wishlist was clear:

  • Easygoing, but confident enough to take charge

  • Natural photos that feel like them

  • Traditional family photos (without chaos)

  • Zero awkward, overly posed, Instagram-curated moments

  • Thoughtful lighting for different skin tones

They wanted their gallery to feel real, not staged.

(We were already besties at that point. They just didn’t know it yet.)

How They Found Lindsay Stayton Photography

They found me on The Knot, filtered their list, and started scheduling calls.

After our conversation:

“The minute we hung up, we both looked at each other and were like, ‘Okay, we’re obviously going with her, right?’”

I’ll be riding that compliment straight into my retirement.

My Role (Besides Carrying Cameras and Emotional Support Energy)

Beyond photography, I helped them:

  • Plan and decide on their first look

  • Think through their wedding day timeline

  • Navigate the flow of the day

And on the wedding day itself:

  • Helped Jeremy relax in front of the camera

  • Checked in on timing throughout the day

  • Stayed a few extra minutes to capture the surprise sign reveal

  • Engaged with their guests so family photos felt fun, not forced

One of my favorite compliments?

They loved how intentional I was about lighting and skin tones—something we talked about early on and something I bring into every inclusive Milwaukee wedding I photograph.

The Rooftop Finale

We ended their night on The Atrium’s rooftop—Milwaukee skyline behind them, winter air around us, custom sign in hand, and that just-married glow you can’t fake.

Those are the moments I live for.

A Lovely Review from Google from Madeline and Jeremy:

Here’s what Madeline and Jeremy shared:

“Absolutely recommend!!!! Lindsay was so wonderful to work with. She not only did a PHENOMENAL job with the photos but she is warm, easy going, and energetic. She worked with us to get the exact type of photos we were looking for, everyone at our wedding thought she was awesome, and she directed everyone for photos with a fun but efficient approach. The way she made our 1 year old nephew laugh for family photos is something we will never forget! She also made anyone who was not feeling photogenic feel comfortable. We absolutely loved working with her and could not say enough good things. Lindsay is a MUST for anyone looking for a great wedding photographer.”

A Note From Me (Hi, It’s Lindsay)

Jeremy and Madeline’s wedding is the kind of day that reminds me why I do this. Not for perfect centerpieces or viral moments—but for values, connection, and the way people show up for each other.

If that sounds like the kind of wedding you’re planning, I’d love to tell your story next.
