What to Wear for Family Photos
(Without Looking Like a Catalog from 2009)
If you’ve ever stood in front of your closet thinking, “Why does nothing I own suddenly feel like ‘family photo worthy’?”— welcome. You’re in very good company.
Outfits can feel like the hardest part of planning family photos, especially when you’re trying to balance comfort, style, kids with opinions, and the very real fear of accidentally recreating a JCPenney ad from 2009. (We’ve all been there. The white shirts. The jeans. The unspoken agreement to never speak of it again.)
I’m Lindsay, a Milwaukee family photographer who believes your photos should feel like you, not a catalog. So let’s talk about what actually works — in real life, real weather, real kids, and real families.
Why Comfort Beats “Pinterest Perfect” (Every Single Time)
Here’s my honest photographer truth: the most beautiful photos happen when people can move, laugh, and breathe in what they’re wearing.
If someone is tugging at a tight collar, adjusting a dress strap, or trying not to scuff brand-new shoes, it shows. Shoulders creep up. Smiles go a little stiff. Kids turn into tiny, emotional protestors. And suddenly, the vibe is less “warm family connection” and more “group project we didn’t sign up for.”
Comfort doesn’t mean boring. It means:
Soft fabrics that move with you
Layers you can take on and off
Shoes you can actually walk in (more on that in a minute)
When you’re comfortable, you’re present. And when you’re present, your photos feel like a memory — not a performance.
Color Palettes That Photograph Beautifully in Milwaukee Seasons
Milwaukee gives us seasons with personality. Let’s dress for them instead of fighting them.
🌸 Spring in Milwaukee
Think soft, fresh, and light.
Sage green
Dusty blue
Blush
Cream
Light denim
Spring light is gentle, and these colors play beautifully with blooming trees, parks, and lakefront locations.
☀️ Summer in Milwaukee
Bright but not neon. Warm but not overwhelming.
Soft whites
Warm tans
Muted blues
Soft yellows
Light olive
Pro tip: avoid super bold logos or loud patterns. They steal the spotlight from the people in the photo — and the people are kind of the whole point.
🍂 Fall in Milwaukee
This is our main character season.
Rust
Mustard
Deep green
Navy
Warm brown
Burgundy
These tones look incredible against fall leaves, urban brick, and cozy textures like knits and scarves.
❄️ Winter in Milwaukee
Crisp, clean, and cozy.
Cream
Charcoal
Forest green
Soft gray
Muted red
Winter sessions shine when outfits feel layered and intentional — think sweaters, coats, and textures that add visual warmth.
The Golden Rule: Coordinate, Don’t Match
Instead of everyone wearing the same color, choose 2–3 main colors and build outfits around them. Mix light and dark tones. Add neutrals. Let each person’s outfit feel like part of the same story — not the same uniform.
Shoes Matter More Than People Think (Hello, Walking Sessions)
A lot of my Milwaukee family sessions involve moving — strolling through parks, walking along the lakefront, exploring neighborhoods, or chasing a kid who just discovered they can, in fact, run very fast.
Here’s what I always tell families:
If you can’t walk comfortably in your shoes for 20 minutes, don’t wear them to your session.
Shoes don’t need to be fancy. They need to be:
Clean
Neutral or complementary in color
Comfortable
Great options:
Casual boots
Simple sneakers
Flats
Sandals (weather permitting — because, Milwaukee)
And yes, shoes show up in photos more than you think. They’re part of the story, especially in walking and candid moments.
HOWEVER, if your kiddo is having a FIT about shoes… don’t fight them! Let them wear the light up shoes, socks or heck, none at all… I PROMISE, it will make for the best and fun photos! (Keep reading…)
Letting Kids Keep a Little “Them” in Their Outfits
This is one of my favorite parts of family sessions.
Kids don’t want to feel like tiny, styled props. They want to feel like themselves. And honestly? That’s where the magic is.
Let them:
Pick between two parent-approved options
Wear their favorite color
Keep their beloved bracelet, necklace, or hair clip
When kids feel seen and included, they relax. And relaxed kids = genuine smiles, real laughter, and photos that feel alive.
Sometimes that means dinosaur boots with a neutral outfit. Sometimes it means a sparkly headband in the middle of a fall session. And every single time, it means your photos will feel more like your family — not a styled version of one.
A Simple Family Photo Outfit Formula
If you want an easy, low-stress way to plan, try this:
Start with one outfit you love (often a dress, sweater, or jacket for one family member).
Pull 2–3 colors from that piece.
Build everyone else’s outfits using those colors and neutrals.
Add texture (knits, denim, layers, scarves, jackets).
Finish with comfortable shoes.
Done. You’re officially a stylist now.
The Real Goal (It’s Not Perfect Outfits)
The goal isn’t a flawless color palette or a perfectly curated look.
The goal is photos where you can:
See how your kid laughs
Remember how small their hand felt in yours
Feel what this season of life was actually like
As a Milwaukee family photographer, I’m here for the real stuff — the in-between moments, the goofy grins, the quiet hugs, and the way your family fits together in its own, beautiful way.
